#BHM – U-boats, Wales and West African Seamen

After seeing our blog post for Black History Month last October which looked at the links between the U-boat War around the coast of Wales and West African seamen, Liz Millman, of Learning Links International, got in touch to ask us to present a talk at the 2nd International Symposium on Black History in Colwyn Bay this year. At the event were two descendants of the Reverend William Hughes who established the African Institute in Colwyn Bay in 1885. Dr Marian Gwyn, Regional Coordinator for Black History Month Wales, spoke about the Reverend Hughes’s background in North Wales and his work training African boys at the Institute. Other speakers included Norbert Mbu-Mputu talking about his HLF project exploring the history and issues around the Institute. This annual event hopes to raise awareness of Black histories in North Wales. Find out more here: https://www.bhmnw.com/
